What Are The Types Of Vinyl Plank Flooring?

Vinyl floors are available in countless colors, with patterns and motifs, stone and wood imitations, and much more. The most important criterion in choosing a product should definitely be its appearance.

The degree of durability of the floor depends, on the thickness of the vinyl flooring, that is, the layer of wear. A vinyl floor with a thicker wear layer 0.02in or more is impervious to damage, more resilient, and therefore more durable.

However, you should be guided by the so-called class of use, which is mainly determined by the thickness of the decorative layer. This guarantees a certain resistance. At least for all products the use class of private rooms is indicated, it starts with the number 2. Use class 21, for example, describes the suitability of vinyl flooring in private rooms.

Use classes for commercial premises (offices, stores, medical offices) start with number 3, use classes for industrial premises (workshops) with number 4.

The second number – 1, 2, or 3 – indicates how heavy the load can be in that private space. If it is 1, the material is only suitable for single people or rooms with little traffic. With a 3, whole hordes of children can trample on it.

The design or appearance is completely independent of the use.

There are several types of vinyl plank flooring:

  • Vinyl flooring for use in private rooms.
  • 21st light load.
  • 22 medium load.
  • 23 intense load.
  • Vinyl flooring for use in commercial spaces.
  • 31 light load.
  • 32 medium load.
  • 33 intense load.
  • Vinyl flooring for industrial premises.
  • 41  light load.
  • 42 medium load.
  • 43 intense load.

What form is vinyl flooring available in?

Vinyl flooring is available on the market in two forms: as planks, mostly 3.9ft long and 3.9inc to 7.9in wide, and as a roll about one foot wide. You can install vinyl flooring either by the foot or by gluing the panels yourself.

To install vinyl flooring, you’ll need tools: a cutter is the easiest tool.

Vinyl flooring is produced in several forms:

  • Vinyl flooring in the form of planks.

The vinyl plank for vinyl floors are installed thanks to a click system: the pieces simply snap together, but they are not firmly connected to the floor, but rather “float” on it, so to speak – which is why this type is also called a floating floor. It can be laid without glue, and the vinyl boards can easily be removed again if you move. The same principle applies to laminate and another flooring.

Before installing vinyl flooring, all debris and dust must be removed from the subfloor.

The floor should not be laid on parquet or other wood. Cork is also not suitable as a backing for vinyl flooring because it is too soft, even if well glued down. The tile is more suitable.

  • Vinyl flooring in roll form.

The second method of installation is to glue down the vinyl flooring, which is usually the case with rolled flooring. The material is applied to the substrate with a layer of adhesive. This provides extra stability, which, however, is not needed by regular users. This flooring glues down securely and is difficult to remove afterward.

What should you look for when buying the vinyl plank flooring?

A vinyl plank flooring consists of several layers. You decide how much heat the floor lets in, how much it drowns out noise, how quickly it wears out, how easy it is to slip on, and so on.

You should only start choosing the motif once you’ve chosen the right type of vinyl flooring, such as a bathroom floor, or one that can be used very intensively for your café.

When buying should pay attention to the following:

  • Moisture resistance.

Particularly damp areas, such as kitchens and bathrooms, require vinyl flooring that is particularly insensitive to water.

In principle, the surface is water repellent, but in some cases, it is not enough to withstand particularly high levels of humidity in bathrooms.

If the manufacturer does not explicitly state that the floor reliably repels moisture, you should not take the risk and keep your hands off the product in question.

In rooms with extreme climatic conditions – such as a sauna – you should not install vinyl in principle.

  • Noise isolation.

Some vinyl floors incorporate additional insulation against impact noise. Impact noise insulation is necessary so that the neighbors below your apartment are not constantly disturbed by the noise of the soles of your shoes.

A vinyl floor already has an additional insulation layer that reduces noise by 10-20 decibels (dB). It is made, for example, of cork.

If there is no such special layer, only the vinyl itself insulates a little – well below 10 dB. In this case, as a base under the vinyl plank flooring, you need to lay the impact noise insulation. The impact sound insulation itself reduces the volume by about 20 dB.

  • Thermal conductivity.

When using underfloor heating, the flooring must allow heat to pass through. Vinyl flooring with very high insulating properties should not be laid over a heated floor.

If the heated floor is heated from below, heat should not build-up through the vinyl flooring. The degree of thermal insulation of the backing depends on the layers of material used in it.

How strong the thermal barrier is indicated by the unit ft² K / W. The permeability should be below 1.6ft² K / W.

Don’t forget that an extra layer of soundproofing from the steps will reduce the heat transfer even further. Two-floor coverings by themselves may not pose a problem, but in combination, they may be too much for underfloor heating.

Vinyl plank flooring is easy to care for and install. There are many models, but you should choose a design only after you check the specifications and find out which model is tough enough for your space.

The wear layer and the resulting use grade are very important. If there are a lot of people in the room often, such as a large family, the floor should be able to withstand a correspondingly higher load, class 23.

Vinyl plank flooring gives rooms a luxurious look and durability of floors without warping. Almost all vinyl flooring manufacturers offer imitation wood, imitation tiles, or with colorful patterns, which is very convenient.

FAQs- Vinyl Plank Flooring For Your Home

✅ Is vinyl plank flooring sensitive to heat?

Vinyl plank flooring should only be installed after it has reached room temperature. If the panels have previously been in a cold storage room, they will expand after installation and, in the worst case, break.

Normal heat does not affect vinyl plank flooring, such as from underfloor heating. However, you should not use the flooring near a fireplace. With such intense heat, the material will expand and bend, causing it to deteriorate.

✅ Can I lay my own vinyl plank flooring?

Yes, of course. Even a beginner can do the job. It is important that before you start your work, the surface is well cleaned of debris and dust, and is as even as possible – otherwise, the vinyl floor may be damaged later on.

These boards should be laid with an offset in relation to each other, following the principle of a brick wall. If you put the boards toward the window, the room will be flooded with light. If you put the boards across, the room will be deeper. Decide in advance how you would prefer to live.

Use small setting wedges to keep the vinyl plank flooring from hitting the wall during installation. It may then expand slightly to the sides.

✅ Is vinyl flooring toxic?

There used to be a lot of problems with PVC (polyvinyl chloride) used in vinyl floors. The flooring was considered a fire accelerant – nowadays, tape testing for vinyl flooring is no longer a big problem, the products are considered flame retardant.

Most manufacturers are now mostly doing without harmful additives and replacing certain plasticizers with less harmful substances.

✅ What is the coating of vinyl plank flooring made of?

Vinyl plank flooring is a very easy floor to install, and most often vinyl flooring consists of three layers:

  • The core or base layer, which provides the structure of the stiffness.
  • Design layer, which looks like wood, tile, etc.
  • Transparent and protective, wear-resistant layer.

Some models of vinyl parquet have a rather rigid, some – flexible surface, and many manufacturers of vinyl parquet, add a top coating on top of the protective layer.
