Buying and evaluation criteria for lawn mowers with wheel drive
Lawnmowers with wheel drive can be divided into several product categories. In each of these categories, there are a variety of models. To help you find the right machine for you, we will show you which criteria you can use to compare wheel-drive lawnmowers. In summary, these are:
- Number of wheels
- Number of gears/reverse gear
- Guide rail
- Cutting width
- Discharge (side discharge)
- Blade stop/engine stop
In the following, we will explain to you what exactly the individual criteria are.
Number of wheels
Wheel drive lawn mowers come with either three or four wheels. In the three-wheeled models, there are two wheels at the rear and one at the front. The front-wheel usually rotates 360 degrees. This makes three-wheel drive lawn mowers very maneuverable and best suited for lawns with many trees or beds. Models with four wheels are not quite as maneuverable, but they make it easier to mow in straight paths.
Number of gears / Reverse gear
One gear is better than no gear, but only one gear brings significant disadvantages. Due to the fact that it is not possible to regulate the speed, the mower often runs too fast on obstacle stretches and too slow on long straight stretches. If the mower with wheel drive offers the possibility of shifting to different gears, you can perfectly adapt it to the existing terrain conditions. If your lawnmower with wheel drive even offers reverse gear, you can easily and quickly reverse. In this way, you can quickly get back over places that you have just moved.
How much horsepower a wheel-drive lawnmower has under the hood naturally determines how powerful it is. For lawns that are on a slope or that have bumps, a mower with a horsepower of 5 or more is recommended. If you use a mower with less power for such areas, they may not be mowed properly. Also, you risk damaging your lawnmower.
Wheeled lawn mowers make gardening much easier, despite their higher weight compared to other mowers. Nevertheless, weight is also a factor that should not be ignored. Because the heavier a lawnmower with wheel drive is, the more difficult it is to handle. Weight is also a factor if you can’t push your wheel-drive lawnmower on a level path from where it’s stored to where it needs to be mowed. For example, if you have to carry it up a flight of basement stairs, you’ll quickly appreciate a lightweight machine.
Guide to rail
A height-adjustable handlebar will save you from backache. The height of the guide bar should be adjustable to fit the height of the mower. If it also offers soft grips, you will have the highest possible comfort when mowing the lawn. But you shouldn’t ignore the guide bar when it comes to storage either. If it can be folded down, you save a lot of space.
The different types of wheel-drive mowers also have different ranges of cutting widths. For gasoline-powered models, the cutting width ranges from 15.7 to 20.8″. For electric wheel-drive lawnmowers, the cutting width ranges from12.5 to 18.5″. The larger, the more area can be mowed at once. Therefore, lawnmowers with wheel drive and a smaller cutting width are more suitable for smaller lawns with a size between 300 m² and 500 m². The devices with a large cutting width, on the other hand, are suitable for larger lawns from about 500 m².
Discharge (side discharge)
There are different types of discharge on wheel-drive lawnmowers. With rear discharge, the mown grass is discharged to the rear. To prevent you from being hit in the process, a collection container is mounted on the ejector. This also makes them suitable for collecting leaves and twigs while mowing.
However, you should not use the mulching function when the grass is too high or wet, as the clippings will clump together. Most lawn mowers with wheel drive offer the possibility to switch between the collection bucket and the mulching function.
With side discharge, on the other hand, the lawnmower ejects the clippings to the side. This lands on the lawn and must be cleaned up afterward. Even with a lawnmower with wheel drive and mulching function, the clippings end up back on the lawn. Here, however, this is intentional. This is because these devices cut the grass so small that it can be used as mulch to maintain the lawn.
Blade stop/motor stop
For the safety of the mower, the function of the engine stop is particularly important. In order for the wheeled lawnmower to run, you must keep a switch on the guide bar depressed during operation. As soon as you release this switch, the engine and blades stop immediately. However, in newer models you do not have to worry about the absence of this function, as it is mandatory here.
Types of lawn mowers with wheel drive
There are three different types of wheel drive lawn mowers. The gasoline, the electric and the electric with battery. Each category has its advantages and disadvantages. You can find out exactly which ones they are here.
Wheeled lawnmowers – gasoline
Gasoline-powered lawn mowers with wheel drive are started by means of a pull rope or by means of an electric starter. The advantage of gasoline-powered mowers is clearly their freedom of movement and long operating time before the tank needs to be refilled. In addition, they are usually more powerful than wheel-drive lawn mowers, which are powered electrically. This is matched by the cutting width, which ranges from 15.7″ to 20.8″ for gasoline-powered models, making them particularly suitable for medium to large lawns.
However, not everything about gasoline-powered lawn mowers with wheel drive is positive. For example, these devices are very noisy, not exactly environmentally friendly, and also require regular maintenance.
Wheel drive lawn mower – Electric
Electric lawn mowers with wheel drive are connected to the mains via a cable and are thus supplied with energy. This makes them more environmentally friendly than gasoline-powered mowers, and there is also no risk of an empty tank. Electric mowers are also superior to gasoline mowers in operation, electricity is now cheaper than gasoline, plus they require less frequent maintenance.
However, their advantage is also their biggest weakness, because electric lawnmowers with wheel drive can also only be used where there is a power connection. In addition, the cable makes them rather unsuitable for areas with trees or beds. Because of this and also because of their cutting width of 12.5″ to 18.5″, they are mostly suitable for smaller green areas up to a size of 500 m².
Wheel-drive lawnmowers – battery-powered
Battery-powered wheel-drive lawn mowers, by and large, have the advantages of their corded counterparts. However, the lack of a cord makes them suitable for lawns far from a power supply, where greater mobility is an advantage.
However, battery operation does not only bring advantages. Often, on larger lawns, the battery dies before the job is done. If you want to mow areas larger than 500 m² with a battery-powered lawn mower with wheel drive, you should have a second battery on hand.
