The type of paint required to achieve the best performance of the projector screen will depend on several factors.

  • The luminous flux of the projector.
  • The amount of light in the room.
  • What will be projected on the screen.

Each of the three factors affects the brightness of the projector screen image. Techniques with less lumen and rooms with more ambient light will require paint with higher reflectivity to maintain crisp colors.

Conversely, projectors with higher lumens and lower ambient light will require less reflective paint that will not create glare.

It’s also worth considering the content. that will be projected on a painted wall. For brighter programs, it is better to buy paint with less reflectivity and vice versa.

A paint screen for a projector is the perfect option for those who want to create their own movie theater. Now there is no need to buy special huge canvases, which are uncomfortable and impractical to use.

Special paints for the screen

The process of creating a projection screen on the wall is as simple as possible and will take a minimum of time:

Choose a wall – it should be as large as possible and not clutter the furniture, so that you do not constantly remove it when there is a desire to watch a movie, cartoon or even play a computer game.

Now the surface of the wall should be treated – cleaned of dust and other contaminants, check for defects and, if necessary, to correct any irregularities. Cover with a layer of primer and let dry.

Then you can apply paint, if necessary, you can outline the boundaries of the screen by connecting a projector.

For maximum effect, the screen can be outlined with a straight line of black paint or use wooden strips. Such a contrasting frame will make the visual perception of the image much better.

By painting one wall with such projection paint it is possible to create a cinema with a minimum investment of money. In such a room, you can not only spend evenings with your family watching movies, but also host guests, projecting interesting stories on the screen.

marker paintVersatility VS Specialization

For starters – there is no perfect solution for a marker surface on which to display a projector image. Universal will always be a little worse than specialty paint for the projector and a separate marker board.

If you don’t have enough space / budget / time / very strict requirements for quality images from the projector, a universal option is optimal – matte white Rust-Oleum marker paint.

What is the difficulty in using marker paint for a projector?

For a projector, you need as matte a surface as possible so there is a greater viewing angle and less glare. For a marker board, on the contrary, a glossy finish is optimal, because the glossier the surface, the easier it is to erase markers. Accordingly, the board is less dirty and lasts longer.

Magnetic paint for the projectorWhat’s the solution

Use a semi-glossy (matte) marker coating – on the one hand it allows you to see images from the projector, on the other hand it allows you to write with markers.

Matte marker paint is obtained by adding special matting additives to the glossy base, which make the structure of the coating more ribbed (it is clearly visible, for example, under a microscope). ΠΆ

he universal variant provides a good quality of the image from the projector and the marker inscriptions.

Where will the universal coating be relevant?

This solution is suitable for schools, educational and cultural institutions, public spaces and any other places where you need to combine a marker board with the ability to display images from the projector in a limited area.

What is the right way to use marker paint for a projector?

It is important to choose a surface that is not exposed to direct sunlight – under bright sunlight the image will be poorly visible (however, this applies to any paint, including special paint for the projector). If the surface is near a window facing the sunny side, use blackout curtains.

When using matte marker paint for a projector, the viewing angle is important – if the screen is at an angle, glare is possible, readability and brightness of the images will decrease. Therefore, the surface for the projector should be directly in front of the auditorium (usually in school classrooms and auditoriums this is the case).

More versatility

If you want to make the surface even more versatile, first apply magnetic paint or plaster and then the more expensive matte marker paint. After it dries, you get a 3-in-1 surface – you can paint on it, attach magnets, and display images from a projector.

How to take care of the surface?

Just like a regular whiteboard. Buy special markers for marker boards, do not draw with permanent markers, felt-tip pens, do not leave drawings on the board for a long time (the marker dries out – it is harder to erase). To clean, use a microfiber cloth or a special cleaning spray for boards. Do not use abrasive cleaners or sponges with hard, rough surfaces.

How is it applied?

Projection paint is applied with a regular roller.

After it dries, it becomes a full-fledged projection surface.

The number of layers applied to the surface is of great importance. If the room is quite dark and there are no windows facing the street, then only one coat will be enough to obtain a bright and contrasting picture. And if the room has good lighting, you should apply two or three additional layers of paint. In this case, the image will be better reflected from the surface and have better contrast and color rendering.

Types of paints for the projector

To date, three types of paint are common, namely:

  • To create a direct projection (enhances the reflection from the surface).
  • To create rear projection (the projector is placed behind the screen and shines on the transparent glass).
  • To create 3D stereo projection (provides 3D effect).

There are also special marker and magnetic paints, thanks to which it is possible to significantly expand the functionality of the projection wall and turn it into a board. Such products are applied on top of the main layer.
