Since there is a lot to consider when buying a lawnmower oil, we have summarized the most important information in this article. We have also selected various products and tested them for the most important criteria. We hope you enjoy reading this article.

What types of lawnmower oil are there?

Since there are different types of engines, there are also different types of lawnmower oils. It can be distinguished between lawn mower oil for engines in 2-stroke or 4-stroke.
When distinguishing the lawn mower oil, there is to consider whether the lawnmower is operated only in spring and summer, or all year round.

For those who own a 2-stroke lawnmower, a conventional 2-stroke lawn mower oil will suffice. For 4-stroke engines, there are the following different types:

Lawnmower Oil SAE 30

This type of lawn mower oil has a viscosity of 30. SAE stands for Society of Automotive Engineers and assesses the viscosity of the oil.

Advantages:

  • Best suited for 4-stroke engines
  • High viscosity

Disadvantages:

  • Not suitable for use in the cold season

This 4-stroke engine oil is suitable for use in the warmer months of the year. It should not be used in the winter months. The price is lower compared to all-season oil.

Lawnmower oil 10w30

This type of lawn mower oil can also be used in winter. This denotes the number 10 which stands for the flow property in cold weather. The smaller the number, the better it is for cold.

Advantages:

  • Suitable for 4-stroke engines
  • Suitable for winter use

Disadvantages:

  • Most of the time, the lawnmower is not used in winter
  • Higher price

Before buying, you should think again about whether you will use the lawnmower in winter. This may affect the price of lawn mower oil.

Who is lawn mower oil suitable for?

Lawnmower oil is suitable for anyone who cares about their lawnmower. Since the purchase of a lawnmower often involves a lot of money, it pays to maintain it carefully. Thus, lawnmower oil is one of the most important components of maintenance, in addition to cleaning.
Thus, lawn mower oil should be components in every garage with a lawnmower. Due to the large packing volume, lawnmower oil is also ideally acquirable for gardening companies or house care companies. Due to a large package volume, the price can be lower.

Types of lawnmower oils

There are different types of oils, and they all have certain differences. To avoid making a costly mistake when choosing the best lawn mower oil, you should consider the characteristics of the oils. In general, there are two main types of oil: engine oil and small engine oil. All oils have differences in composition (that is, formula): some are conventional oil, some are a mixture of conventional and synthetic, and some are fully synthetic. Older oils usually had only one weight or grade, while modern (newer) oils have an added viscosity grade.

  • SAE 30  is a single-grade oil with a viscosity grade of 30, which is safe for small air-cooled engines, usually older models.
  • SAE 10W-30 is all-season engine oil that can perform at both low and high temperatures in a fairly balanced temperature range.
  • SAE 5W-30 is a low viscosity, all-season engine oil that flows better at lower temperatures (than 10W-30), but protects the engine sufficiently in the heat.
  • Synthetic SAE 5W-30 is a synthetic (man-made) lawnmower oil that works in both cold and warm weather. Synthetic oils are usually more stable over temperature ranges than conventional oils.

Buying and evaluation criteria for lawn mower oils

When looking for the right lawn mower oil, you will first come across many products. With so many products to choose from, it can be difficult to find the right lawn mower oil at first. However, there are some criteria you should use to guide you. The following criteria should make it easier for you to find the right lawn mower oil for your lawnmower.

Suitability of the lawnmower oil

Since there are different types of lawnmowers, it is important to find the right oil for them. When buying a lawnmower oil, you should know what type of lawnmower you have. Generally, there is a distinction between a 2-stroke and a 4-stroke.

If you do not know what type of engine is installed in your lawnmower, you should check the manual. This is a crucial decision when buying lawn mower oil.

Here is what you should consider:

Type Description
2-stroke In a 2-stroke engine, the lawnmower oil is usually mixed with the fuel. However, there are also models where there is an extra oil tank that automatically mixes the lawn mower oil with the fuel. Thus, in the 2-stroke engine, the lawnmower oil is co-burned and serves for proper use.
4-stroke Most modern lawn mowers are built with 4-stroke engines. Unlike the 2-stroke engine, here the lawn mower oil is not burned but serves to lubricate the important engine parts.

Should you have this question settled, you can look around for high-quality lawn mower oil.

Viscosity class

A 4-stroke oil is divided into different viscosity classes, which can be read off from a “W” on the product packaging in combination with a number. It indicates how thin or viscous an oil is. The higher the number, the more viscous the oil.

The “W” stands for winter. The smaller the number associated with it, the more cold-resistant the oil.

The recommended viscosity grade is based on the temperatures at which your mower will be used. Basically, you should consider whether your lawn mower will be used only in the summer or year-round.

Viscosity, in turn, is part of the SAE classification. SAE is the abbreviation for “Society for Automotive Engineers.” It was this association that defined the various viscosity classes in 1911.

What is special about lawn mower oil and what advantages does it offer?

Lawnmower oil is important for any fuel-powered lawn mower and contributes to its durability. Quality lawn mower oil keeps the engine area clean. Lawnmower oil is essential for the use of a fuel-powered lawnmower.
Failure to use lawn mower oil risks damaging the lawnmower, making it unusable. Thus, lawnmower oil is an important ingredient when using a lawnmower.

How often should change the oil of a lawnmower be?

To contribute to the long service life of the lawnmower, regular maintenance is part of it. Therefore, the lawnmower oil should also be changed. Only refilling is not enough for careful maintenance, the oil should be changed completely at regular intervals.

It is better to check the oil level once more than too little.

Heat causes the lawn mower oil to lose its lubricating ability. Likewise, dirt particles can form. Therefore, the lawnmower oil of a 4-stroke engine should be changed once a year. Spring is the best time for this, before the first operation.

For heavily used lawn mowers, that is, more than 25 hours a year, this is not enough. Especially in difficult conditions when mowing the lawn, the lawnmower oil visibly deteriorates. That is, here, the lawn mower oil should be changed approximately every 25 hours of use.

For a newly purchased lawnmower, the lawnmower oil should be changed after 5 to 6 hours. This prolongs the service life. It is different with 2-stroke engines. Since the lawn mower oil is mixed directly with the fuel, there is no need to change the lawn mower oil.

How to change the oil of a lawnmower?

Too much as well as too little lawn mower oil in the lawnmower is not good. Therefore, this should be checked more often and refilled if necessary. There are a few steps to follow when refilling.
In order to check the oil level, a dipstick is usually integrated into every lawnmower. To measure, the dipstick is cleaned with a paper towel and then inserted into the oil reservoir.

The oil level should not be below the minimum limit, but also not above the maximum limit.

Therefore, fill with a funnel until just before the maximum limit. If you want to change the lawn mower oil, the engine should already be warmed up. After warming up, the spark plug cap should be pulled out to be on the safe side. Then find and open the oil drain plug and pour the old lawn mower oil into a container.

For the inexperienced, this is often a messy business. That is why it is a good idea to use an oil suction device. With this device, the lawnmower oil can be easily extracted. After you have filled the lawn mower oil, you can fill it again with new.
