Select the composition

It is also necessary to lubricate the shanks of drills before inserting them into the chuck. This reduces the penetration of dust inside the tool and also increases the life of the chuck and percussion mechanism. Without lubrication, the rotating splines will wear out and the striker seals will wear out, resulting in a reduction in impact force. There is a wide choice of greases for drills, but it is better to take those recommended by the manufacturer of your tool. The grease is applied to the drill shank and the excess is removed with a rag after it is inserted in the chuck. It is also important that the auger is clean before the grease is applied. The biggest mistake is to take the auger with the remaining grease out of the chuck and put it in concrete dust, and then cover the shank with those crumbs with grease and put it back in the chuck. Concrete and grease give an abrasive paste that wears down the barrel faster than no grease at all.

Tip: It is recommended to check drill shanks after every 180 to 200 holes drilled. Clean off the dust with a dry cloth and apply new lubricant.

Working with a rotary hammer

According to the installed equipment and the tasks to be performed, select the desired mode – drilling, drilling with impact, or impact. Why do you need the reverse?

In rotary hammers, it is only needed to retrieve the auger that is stuck in the material. The reverse rotation makes it easier to get it out. It is important to remember the positions of the reversing switch. It happens that they forget to turn it off and begin to work in the impact mode (with the chisel installed it is not visible in what direction the rotation goes). In this case, the load on the perforator increases, and its electrical part can fail.

How to connect the tool to a vacuum cleaner?

Such a question arises when you need to work in already finished rooms and the formation of a large amount of dust is undesirable. For this purpose, the working part of the perforator is equipped with an attachment with a dust extraction, which is connected to the hose of a construction vacuum cleaner. This solution is used, for example, when installing air conditioners, assembling built-in furniture, performing additional outlets in the living space. But if in your work such situations do not occur often, you can use a construction tip: cut off the top of a plastic bottle with a bevel and make a slot on the side for the drill. By placing the beveled part against the wall and positioning the neck with the cap closed at the bottom, you can drill cleanly indoors and the dust will fall inside the bottle.

Tip: Don’t put pressure on the tool trying to increase the impact on the material. This will not help and instead may cause overloading. You should also take breaks to cool down the perforator and tooling. For example, for professional models, you should rest for at least 10 minutes after every 30 minutes of work.

A rotary hammer is under serious strain during work, so it needs proper care for long service life. Practice shows that even an expensive professional tool can be ruined before the warranty period expires if maintenance tips are neglected. On the contrary, an inexpensive household perforator can last for many years with careful and attentive use. Here are a few tips.

  • Be sure to clean the housing after work. Especially pay attention to the ventilation holes. If dust gets clogged in them, air will not be able to pass to the motor and it will overheat. The cartridge and tooling should also be kept clean.
  • Check the amount of grease in the gearbox regularly. Parts should not run dry. If you disassemble your hammer for maintenance or repair, check for grease and apply it to the parts as needed. Some models have a window in the housing where you can add grease without disassembling the housing. After the grease is applied, assemble the tool, plug it in, and let it run to distribute the grease between the parts.
  • Do not wait until the brush unit is completely worn out. If you feel that the power of your rotary hammer has decreased or there is a spark in the header area, those are signals to replace the brushes. Many modern models have an indicator light to let you know. To replace the brushes, you have to remove the back of the hammer. Some repairs can be done by yourself, such as replacing the brushes or the striker seal. But if you need a more serious repair, such as replacing the armature, it is better to contact experts. Below we will give information on how you can repair the tool at home. But if you are not sure that you have enough knowledge and experience, it is better not to do it and trust the professionals.

Repair of a perforator with your own hands

If the warranty has expired, and you have no opportunity to go to a service center for a paid repair, you can try to fix the problem yourself. In such a case, it is important to know how to disassemble and reassemble the perforator correctly.

Disassembly of the mechanical part

Let’s say that the percussion mechanism began to work badly. In this case, it is not necessary to disassemble the entire tool – you only need to get to the mechanical part.

  • Remove the mode switch by pressing and turning it to the stop. It is usually easy to remove from the socket.
  • Remove the chuck. You can pick up the retaining ring with a flathead screwdriver. This is also useful for removing the washer, spring, and ball. Put all the small parts in the box.
  • Wipe off the dust from the chuck mount with a clean rag or cloth to prevent abrasion from entering the tool.
  • The gear cover is easily detached from the housing by loosening the screws. A Phillips screwdriver will come in handy.

When attaching the rotor, you need to spin it slightly so that it engages inside. When installing the back cover of the perforator, you should be careful to get all the wires inside so as not to pinch them. You should not be in a hurry to screw all the screws to secure the case. First you need to make sure that the assembly is correct by twisting the chuck by hand. If it twists – everything is assembled correctly, you can fix the screws.

Tip: When disassembling the hammer, put the parts from the individual units in separate boxes, so as not to mix up anything when reassembling.
