Benefits of Driveway Fabric

Laying driveway cover under the driveways has many advantages over similar works, without using it. For example:

  • Increases the load-bearing capacity of the driveway.
  • Significantly reduced number of weeds, which over time grow through the coating.
  • The soil layer and the driveway structure are reliably separated from each other.
  • Layers of gravel and sand are not mixed, which allows the sand cushion to serve as an excellent basis for paving tiles.
  • Under the influence of the environment and over time, the driveway does not deform.
  • The layer of gravel covered with driveway fabric cloth also serves as a drainage ditch.
  • In case of need for a small repair of the track or replacement of individual tiles, the defects can be corrected without much difficulty.
  • It is possible to create a high-quality driveway of any shape on exhausted soils or landscapes with defects.

Advantages of Landscape Fabric

Acting as a textile filter, geotextile interacts with the underlying soil and prevents the removal of particles from it. Therefore, free water squeezed into the drainage layer under the influence of the car does not silt it up, which leads to an increase in bearing capacity.

The high porosity of the material ensures the free passage of water both from bottom to top and top to bottom.

The reinforcing effect is achieved due to its own strength and high initial modulus of elasticity, redistribution of stresses in the soil-load transfer from the more loaded zones to the adjacent areas that are not loaded.

During the road works, the geotextile fabric is used as a sub-base for making temporary roads and access roads.

A layer of geotextiles performs a reinforcing function, compensating dynamic and static loads and making it possible to redistribute tension in the base of the embankment, thus increasing its carrying capacity. Rutting decreases and roadbed settlement is more uniform.

The use of geotextiles allows reducing consumption of crushed stone and sand without any loss of quality, preserving load-carrying and draining capacity of the road base, reducing considerably the period of work and the cost of operation and maintenance. At the same time, the durability of the structure only increases.

How to use Driveway Fabric

Preparatory work

The first step is to outline the contour of the future driveway. To do this, you should take paving tiles, gravel, bricks, or any other material from which the path will be laid, and carefully arrange it in the right place. You should mark the contours of the path with a rope, pegs, or dig a small hollow.

According to the planned outline to dig a ditch 30-40 cm deep. The bottom of the trench should be as flat as possible, without debris, stones, plant roots, splinters, and any other protruding objects. The walls of the ditch should have a slight slope, slightly reminiscent of a trough.

At the bottom of the trench is poured a small layer of sand and carefully smoothed. The sand is designed to finally level the bottom of the groove.

Working with Driveway Fabric

  • On the sand to put one layer of geotextiles so that the edges of the fabric lie on the slopes and at 5-10 cm above ground level.
  • Place the canvas can be any side, as driveway cover in principle has no front side.
  • The canvas should be carefully aligned so that there were no folds or wrinkles. Fix the fabric to each other can be with a construction stapler or a method of stitching. Overlapping fabrics should be more than 15 cm.
  • On the driveway, the fabric is poured a layer of crushed stone thickness of 12-15 cm and leveled. The easiest way to level the layer of gravel is to take a longboard, which as it moves will level all the convexity.
  • On top of the leveled rubble, you need to put another driveway fabric cloth. The bottom of the trench should be as flat as possible, without debris, stones, plant roots, splinters, and any other protruding objects. The walls of the ditch should have a slight slope, slightly reminiscent of a trough.
  • At the bottom of the trench is poured a small layer of sand and carefully smoothed. The sand is designed to finally level the bottom of the groove.

Completing the laying of the driveway

The surface of the sand lays the driveway. Tiles or stones should be laid according to the conceived pattern, and carefully tamped in every detail. For this purpose, you can use a medium-size rubber hammer.

In the end, you need to carefully cut the protruding above the ground fragments of driveway cover. The seams between the plates are covered with dry sand and then rubbed with a hard brush or broom. You can also use concrete or sand and cement mortar for grout. Cracks along the contour of the track must be filled with fresh earth and the surface must be leveled.

FAQs - Driveway Fabric

❓ How long will fabric last?

When properly installed and maintained, 25 years is a conservative expectation.

❓ Do I need to use pins or staples with a driveway fabric?

Pins or staples can be used for convenience, but are not required to hold the fabric in place.

❓ Should I use a geotextile under a paved driveway?

It will increase the life of the pavement and help reduce cracking of the pavement. Place it between the subgrade and the road base material.
