What is the difference between crack sealing and crack filling?
For simplicity, crack sealing is generally installing crack sealant (specialized material) that may or may not include a deposit. Crack filling is generally installing a crack filler (non-specialized material).
The four terms are:

- A specialized material that adheres to the crack walls and can move horizontally and vertically with the pavement as it expands and contracts;
- It prevents the intrusion of water and debris into the crack;
- Is specifically designed to remain flexible at low temperatures, so it will not crack or open, and remain stable at higher temperatures, so it will not creep or bleed into the pavement.

When the pavement moves due to temperature changes or traffic loads, the crack filler separates from the edge, allowing water and incompressible materials to enter the crack and pavement. Examples of crack fillers are asphalt cement, liquid asphalt, cutback asphalts, or asphalt emulsions that can be mixed with sand, which is occasionally referred to as “oil and sand”.
As you can see from the definitions, there are differences in materials that are designed for different purposes: prevention versus reduction of infiltration is a significant difference.
The installation process of these materials can also differ and have different results.
Crack sealant can be installed in a reservoir and is often referred to as a crack seal installation. When crack sealant (specialized material) is installed in a reservoir, it can have a variety of finishing techniques and to name a few:
- standard recessed band-aid;
- shallow recessed band-aid.
Crack filling as a process is considered a “bump and go” crack sealant application, as noted above. However, note that crack sealant consists of different materials than crack sealant and is not placed in a reservoir with the same intent and purpose (prevention versus reduction of infiltration) and, therefore, would not use a crack sealing facility using a reservoir for crack fill products.
So, for a simple conclusion, crack sealing generally consists of installing a crack sealant (specialized material) that may or may not include a reservoir. Crack filling generally consists of installing a crack filler (non-specialized material). Crack sealant has been shown in independent studies to work on asphalt pavements from 2 to more than 10 years, depending on the condition of the pavement from poor to good, respectively.
The crack sealer has been shown to work on concrete for up to 21 years.
Crack filler has generally been shown to work for 1 to 2 years. Crack sealant is a long-term pavement preservation solution, while the crack filler is a band-aid. Pavement always moves horizontally or vertically to some extent and, therefore, sealing is preferred over backfilling so that it can actually preserve the giant investment in our roads.

There are a variety of crack sealing solutions, and sorting through them can be a challenge. Generally, there is a hot-applied asphalt-based crack sealant and cold-applied crack sealant. Cold-applied crack sealant should not be confused with cold-applied silicone joint sealant because cracks and joints are different as stated above.

An important cause of complex defects in road pavements is violation of its integrity, i.e. the appearance of cracks. Moisture penetrating through the cracks of the top layer of asphalt into the lower layers of asphalt concrete pavement and deformations during the movement of transport lead to further development of cracks, and eventually to the formation of defects, which require patching repair. Restoring the integrity of the surface by sealing cracks eliminates one of the main causes of the most common type of road surface defects – patching.
In the process of crack sealing, the mastic should fill the formed gap in the asphalt layer tightly and elastically, preventing its further destruction under the influence of transport load, precipitation and high temperature drops.
