While I do not recommend choosing a product with a built-in battery, a well made cordless drill with a built-in battery is still a much better investment than a bad one with a removable battery.

It is more important to focus on the brand you buy from. In fact, this may be one of the most important factors you can consider when determining whether or not a drill is worth its money and will last a long time.

The big brands

There are many products where the branded versions are not really better than their generic counterparts. In the world of tools, this is generally not true.

• The voltage determines the overall performance of the drill. 12-volt drills are common for small household jobs like hanging pictures, while 20-volt drills are often used in construction projects. If you want to do many different things with your drills, it is perhaps best to have one of each! There are also 18-volt drills that offer a more balanced approach.

• The amperage determines how long a battery will last before it needs to be recharged. 2 amp batteries are the most common, but there are many batteries with extended lifetimes that also have amperages like 4. Batteries with different amperages are usually compatible with the same tools and chargers as long as the voltage, model, and brand match.

The voltage capacity is essentially built into the drill, so you get what you see on the packaging. The amperage has much more to do with the battery. Most drill kits contain simple 2A batteries, but higher amperage batteries for the same tool can be purchased separately.
