At the same time, they are inferior to inverters in terms of efficiency.
The answer to the question of which welding machine to choose depends largely on the preferred type of welding. There are three of them:
- Manual arc welding (MMA). Involves the creation of an electric arc with an electrode. Mostly used to work with ferrous metals. Even with professionals, the seam turns out to be quite rough. But MMA-welding has significant advantages: undemanding to the quality of current and to the design of the welder itself.
- Argon-arc welding (TIG). It is carried out with non-consumable electrodes in shielding gas. Characterized by high accuracy and quality of seams, gives the opportunity to work with aluminum on a professional level. On the other hand, the method requires considerable experience in welding, cost of filler rods and inert gas, you need to connect a bulky cylinder.
- Welding with shielding gas (MIG/MAG). Used on semi-automatic welding machines. Supposed to be welded with wire in an inert (in case of non-ferrous metals) or active gas (if you want to work with ferrous metals). Characterized by the high speed of operation and the ability to make long welds. Among the disadvantages: high monetary costs (for wire, gas), the high cost of welding semiautomatic devices, as well as the additional trouble with bulky cylinders.

How to choose an MMA machine for home and cottage?
Some buyers are guided by the brand or a particular model of the welder. However, you should remember that the guarantee of quality electric welding is the skill of the welder in combination with the right equipment. Therefore, focus solely on the characteristics and planned tasks. Below are the parameters that are worth paying initial attention to.
This is the defining and most important parameter. For example, electric welding of serious metal structures requires the use of a four-millimeter (diameter) electrode (amperage from 160A). Usually, models with such characteristics cover the entire range of needs, and on average give an adjustment of up to 200A.
Each material has its own amperage. In addition, the desired value is influenced by the type of welding, the thickness of the workpieces. There are a lot of tables on the Internet to determine the amperage. Some modern welding machines have the necessary information directly on their body.
Two other things are worth mentioning about amperage: metal can be cut at maximum amperage; a certain percentage of energy is lost when the wires from the body to the electrode are lengthened.
DC or AC
Which option is preferable – AC or DC? In the choice it is better to focus on “DC”, as AC is designed for specific operations: welding refractory metals containing oxides; working with contaminated metal surfaces that are not cleaned.
Frequency of switching on
This parameter defines how long the welding equipment will operate without being forced to turn off due to overheating. The value is given as a percentage. A full ten-minute cycle of the tool is taken as 100%. Thus, an SP of 30% means that after every three minutes of continuous work, the welder will need to be given 7 minutes “to rest”.
When selecting a welding machine, you should settle on a duty cycle that will roughly match your tasks. If you need to weld long welds in one approach, then the number should pick up a little more. If you need to literally tack, then the parameter is not decisive for you. Also, note that most of the welders on the shelves have an SP of between 40-70%.
It can be:
- single-phase (220 V)
- three-phase (380 V)
- universal (220/380 V)
The 220 V value is also sufficient for home operations. The voltage of 380 V is encountered in the shops and factories. Three-phase welders, and the more universal ones, cost more.
This is indicated in kilovolt-amperes. It helps to more accurately calculate the load on the connection, whether it is a mains or a generator. The more power consumption, the more powerful the welder itself.
Electrode cable length
The standard wire that comes with the kit, many are not satisfied with. However, this problem is solved quite simply – it is necessary to lengthen the cable within reasonable limits.
There is no need to invent any twisting or soldering, as there is a simple solution – ready-made extension cords equipped with sockets and plugs. Keep in mind that the longer the wire, the greater the loss in amperage. If possible, it is better to lengthen the cable supplying power from the main socket.
The importance of having additional features in the welder

Special functions are really useful and convenient, especially for the inexperienced electric welder. If the welder has no additional options at all, a person with not the strongest nerves can simply give up after a number of failed attempts, and call a specialist – to the detriment of his wallet.
The following special functions are used:
Hot Start. With “Hot Start” the device gives a pulse of increased power as soon as the electrode makes contact with the surface. After a moment there is a return to normal values.
Arc Force. The electrode may stick in case of critical proximity of the workpiece and the electrode. But thanks to Arc Force, the current is increased, which accelerates the melting of the consumable and prevents sticking.
Anti-Stick. Triggers when a prolonged short circuit occurs that exceeds a critical value. “Anti-Stick” prevents the electrode from overheating and crumbling its cladding by reducing the short-circuit current. Contrary to its name, the technology does not prevent sticking itself.
TIG Lift. Allows you to weld parts using the argon-arc method. When “Contact Ignition” is activated, the tool outputs a reduced starting voltage so that the tip of the tungsten electrode will not get dull, chip or burn.
V.R.D. (Voltage Reduction Device). This is the function to limit the no-load voltage. It is designed to increase safety in the workplace. It is obligatory when working in particularly difficult conditions: outdoors, in high humidity, inside metal vessels, etc.
Engine starting. Not related to welding, but very useful for some users. Gives the opportunity to start the motor when the battery is empty without the need for a separate specialized starting device. This function is not very common. Modern starters question its necessity.
Digital display. Depending on the model, can display a variety of information. It will never be superfluous, but to call it critical when choosing any welding machine is not possible.
Not all of the options on the list are necessary or desirable. But the necessary minimum for a quality welder today is: Arc Force, Hot Start, Anti-Stick. Good models also have TIG Lift. The more additional functions, the more expensive the purchase.
Secondary features of the devices
The following aspects of welders are not important for everyone:
- Weight. If you need to transport your welder easily and frequently, then compactness is a significant plus for you. But don’t expect a light and compact “little thing” to produce an impressive SP, because it will overheat.
- Handle/strap. Will allow you to work without extending the cables at height, in hard-to-reach places.
- Feet. Not only increase stability, but also improve cooling as air flows unobstructed from below, taking some of the heat.

What is the maximum diameter of the welding electrode? This parameter depends on the type of welding, the metal to be welded, and the thickness of the workpiece. The thicker the workpiece, the wider the consumables should be.
But there is one important nuance – such a parameter as the maximum diameter of the consumable has nothing to do with the other parameters of the welder. Two welding devices for exactly the same maximum permissible electrode width can be very different from each other in terms of parameters, for example, maximum current.
